Welcome to the Museum of New Caledonia
Built in the seventies, the Museum of New Caledonia has been defined since the late eighties as a museum of societies. Its objectives are the presentation of Kanak and Caledonian people and the preservation of the tangible and intangible heritage of New Caledonia.
The museum is currently closed for expansion and renovation work.
The museum exhibits one of the most beautiful collections of Kanak art in the world, especially monumental sculptures, and the most complete from the point of view of the themes it addresses. It also has a remarkable collection of Pacific Island objects ranging from West Papua to Eastern Polynesia, inviting visitors to discover a collection of rich societies. Vanuatu is particularly well represented.
Location
The museum of New Caledonia is ideally located: Moselle bay, close to the municipal market of Nouméa, it is close to the city center and its picturesque place.
The building that houses the museum, typical of the architecture of the sixties and sixties, is recognizable by its elaborate grilles, inspired by petroglyph motifs.
Its permanent and temporary exhibition rooms surround a patio lined with trees and shrubs belonging to species endemic to New Caledonia. A second garden, planted with columnar pines, is built on the model of a traditional Kanak habitat alley. It leads to the large southern hut, surrounded by plants that still keep Kanak houses today.
Opening times
The museum is currently closed to undergo renovation and enlargement.
